The Montgomery County Emergency Room Overdose Notification (MC-ERON) is a system develop by Ascend which has enabled the Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health board and Public Health – Dayton and Montgomery County to provide outreach services to residents who experienced an emergency hospital visit due to a drug overdose. The system generates a daily list containing basic patient health and contact information used to mobilize outreach efforts to minimize risk of further overdoses and deaths. However, MC-ERON does not currently prioritize, nor indicate, which patients are at a higher risk for additional overdoses or death. To overcome this limitation, Ascend Innovations has updated MC-ERON with a machine learning capability that assigns a prioritization score to each newly discharged overdose patient. This prioritization score is calculated using patient variables such as age, length of hospital stays, number of hospital encounters, comorbidities, etc. This capability helps focus community outreach efforts and resources on those Montgomery County residents most at-risk for accidental overdose death.
