What does good culture fit look like in your organization? How do you cultivate it?
One key to our company’s culture is that every employee is willing to check their ego at the door. No one is too important or too experienced to do what needs to be done. You’ll always hear us asking each other “How can I help?” This keeps us focused on the team’s success as a whole, rather than trying to outshine each other. As a leader, I encourage this culture by doing my fair share (or more if I can) of the mundane tasks. I take my turn with unglamorous tasks like after hours maintenance and deployments just like everyone else. We also make a point of recognizing everyone’s contributions with public shout-outs and celebrations of team milestones.
What’s the best career advice you ever received?
You measure your success not by the products you create or projects you complete, but by your customer’s success using your work to further their initiatives. At Magnetic, and our sister company Marxent, we talk about giving our clients the “white glove treatment.” We strive to make every step of the process easy on the client, from deciding to do the project in the first place...to working with our team on development...to using our products... to measuring the success/effectiveness of our products. We strive to put our customers in a position where they can go to their leadership and say, “Look what I did, see how our company uses it every day, and check out how it is moving the needle for our business.” It would be very easy to sign a deal, deliver a product, and then walk away. But you’ll have better results if you see yourself as a long-term partner in your customer’s success.
