“From Easy Targets to Resilient Allies: The Social Science of Cybersecurity Awareness Training”

This session will share our evidence-based best practices for engaging and training user communities in cybersecurity. In this session we will share the foundations of our cyber-mindfulness training model, explain how we developed and implemented our Awareness-Agency-Action engagement practices and discuss examples
About the Speakers:
Thomas Skill (Ph.D.1984 SUNY/Buffalo) is Associate Provost & CIO at the University of Dayton. He has over 35 years of computing and communications technology experience in higher education and is a tenured professor in the Department of Communication at the university. Among his many IT interests and responsibilities, Skill leads the university’s enterprise IT organization with over 90 employees and, when time permits, teaches courses on cybersecurity, communication and social engineering. In addition, Skill led the team that established the University’s Center for Cybersecurity and Data Intelligence which serves as a key institutional resource for IT security research and education with a focus on highly-experiential learning and multidisciplinary research.
James D. Robinson is a Professor of Communication at the University of Dayton. He joined the University in 1982 and served as the Director of Graduate Studies for more than fifteen years. During this time he has published two books, 43 refereed journal articles, and 25 book chapters. Much of his research has examined the role new communication technologies plays in health. In addition to working with the Center for Cybersecurity and Data Intelligence, Robinson is working on a book that focuses on the role persuasion plays in social engineering exploits and teaches courses on social influence and social engineering.
